Outside of Outside

Giorgio Sadotti, Clair Joy and Liz Wright invite fellow artists to exhibit work in the garden, where each piece would be installed mounted on a white band encircling selected tree trunks. At first seemingly random, the white bands are all at the same height, leading the eye around the garden, forming a horizon line. The format also evokes a continuous white plane, suggesting a white wall or exhibition space, but at the same time accentuates the contrast/difference between the controlled interior of the 'white cube' and the contingencies of the outdoors, between conceptual framing and sensory encounter. A map of the positions of exhibiting artists' work (designed by Giorgio Sadotti in collaboration with Fraser Muggeridge) suggests a perspectival order. This implied structure, both echoes and unsettles the experience of encountering the works in situ, where movement, light and sound reshape perception.
