En Plein Air

Rather than the practice of painting in the open air in a direct physical relationship with nature that the term En Plein Air refers to and invokes, the artists exhibiting in En Plein Air can be seen to connect with expanded ideas related to this practice. In contemporary philosophical and geographical thought, space and time are not separate entities but interconnected and mutually defining. Configurations of space and time are always changing in ways that are difficult to anticipate and constantly evolving. These dynamic interactions are seen to shape our experience and redefine the concept of 'place'. The idea of place emerges not as something fixed but as something continuously becoming. This exhibition proposes that landscape in art is an active field of intersected relations and, both as subject and as method, can reflect these evolving understandings of place.
