From artist:
Tympanum is a performative walk with a cardboard half circle ( 3m x 1.5m x 18mm). Initially made as part of an installation within the architecture of the Kenneth Armitage studio residency. Recast as an element to be carried through the city, the title refers to the form that appears above doorways and windows in classical architecture, sometimes blank but often depicting symbolic imagery or carvings. Here appearing as an abstract form, a half-moon, an animated object, a screen, whereby the image is everything around it rather than projected onto it. Drawing attention to the environment it passes, activating the architecture and everyday scenes it traverses.
This iteration walked from a studio in Camberwell, to its destination juxtaposed with a tree in Outside of Outside at Mecklenburgh Square July 2013. Photographed and filmed en route, the walk/footage was subsequently shown casually on a phone at the location.
