In Writing, the third section of this book, we focus on
how the written word underscores our experience of walking the city. ‘Point to Point’ is a short story written by Sean Ashton in the form of a walking guide. The walk in the story is mostly underground, encompassing the spiral staircase in Russell Square tube station and the area of nearby Mecklenburgh Square. The story alternates between the literal and the imaginative, culminating in a brief tour of Mecklenburgh Square, the entirety of which–as Jaspar Joseph-Lester’s equally fictional Public Notice reminds us–has just been relocated to New Songdo in South Korea. Addressed to local residents, the public notice purports to be from a multinational developer called ‘TRANSHERITAGE’.
The letter is placed on the residents’ noticeboard and gives details of the removal and transportation of Mecklenburgh Square and gardens to the newly built ‘smart city’ New Songdo. This intervention raises questions regarding new forms of land ownership that determine and restrict the way we navigate and use the city.
