Clair Joy is interested in spatial complexity and its relationship to ideas about landscape. These paintings of the surface of the Thames at night are very urban and show varying light levels, movement of the water in different weather conditions and the changing reflections of buildings, all occurring simultaneously. These are shown with paintings of images of London intermingled with images of other international cities, whose names are associated with events and concepts that change our understanding of place.
