The video in which the Essay in Footsteps takes place is Google Earth—an alienating landscape almost seamlessly mapped, sometimes stitched together until the distortions of the maps render them unbuildable. In the Amsterdam’s Bijlmer neighbourhoods, often associated with failed attempts at utopia, they walked with the black weirdness of its shadows. During a repetitive walk around the building Polak uses Judith Butler’s ideas on the performativity of gender and applies them to the city space, exploring different possibilities of what she calls “move-acts”.
