From press release:
The charcoal drawings that make up Us, the most passing of all reflect on our relationship with the road. In post second world war culture it was seen as the place of freedom and of progress and now as we contemplate our destruction of the planet it is viewed from a place of guilt, as dystopian, greedy and a privilege for those able to benefit from that freedom. I wanted to look at the architecture of these places, in this case mainly the A28 and A16 in northern France. However a road synonymous with roads throughout the developed world. The utilitarian form of the bridge and the tunnel becomes monumental in its beauty echoing how we can love and hate what we have achieved; what we have built. Scents of Wanderlust, the road trip and a freedom to roam, cling to the robust grandiosity of these modern day megaliths.
Images based on views from the passenger window of the car. Non-chronological moments fluid in time and space, fleeting diaphanous memories from a semi sleeplessness. They are a combination of actual scenes and colours seen in my mind’s eye as I journey from one place to another.
